Many ear, nose, and throat problems can be caused by allergies. During your initial meeting, he will review your current symptoms as well as take a family history to determine if allergies might be playing a role in your condition.
If Dr. Davis thinks allergies may be the root cause, the first step is determining what you are allergic to. Dr. Davis and his team can then assist in the development of an individualized treatment plan based upon your allergy test results.
Our most common testing method for allergies is skin testing. During your visit, we will use a simple skin prick device and test your sensitivities to certain allergens. This test takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete and provides Dr. Davis an immediate assessment of your allergic condition.
In some cases, Dr. Davis may also recommend a blood test to diagnose your allergies. Results from a blood test will usually be available within 24-48 hours.
While it may not always be possible, this is the first step to consider in allergy treatment.
Several over-the-counter or prescription medications may be taken to control your allergic condition. While the recommended medication may help to control your symptoms, in most cases they will not cure your allergic reaction.
Dr. Davis feels that each case is unique and he will review your symptoms and determine the best medicine for you. He may recommend any of the following: antihistamines, decongestants, prescription nasal sprays, leukotriene inhibitors and more.
Immunotherapy helps to build your antibodies by repeated exposure to allergens, thereby reducing your allergic reaction and possibly eliminating the allergy. Dr. Davis generally recommends this process if avoidance and/or medication does not work to improve your symptoms.
By giving shots or oral medication, Dr. Davis may be able to change your body’s response to the problem allergen. In some cases, Immunotherapy can improve or eliminate your allergic symptoms with the hope that future medications or prescriptions may not be needed.
While there are many options available to treat your allergies, we recommend you come in for a visit with Dr. Davis to let him evaluate your condition.
